Set within the South Wales countryside, Safe Haven provides support for adults with complex autism, learning disabilities and other complex needs. The nature of the home meant the refurbishment needed to go beyond a standard residential upgrade. The finished spaces had to feel comfortable, considered and personal, while also meeting the functional and compliance needs of a specialist care setting.

The works included a broad programme of internal improvements throughout the property, with upgrades to bedrooms, bathrooms, living spaces, circulation areas and supporting services. Existing areas were stripped back, adapted and refurbished to create a more suitable environment for future residents and staff, with attention given to the quality, durability and usability of each space.

A key part of the project was the individual approach taken to the bedrooms. Rather than applying one standard finish throughout, rooms were completed with custom finishes tailored to the specific preferences and requirements of the people who would be using them. This helped create spaces that felt more personal, familiar and supportive, while still sitting within the wider quality and safety expectations of the home.
The wider refurbishment also included service upgrades, fire alarm works, mechanical and electrical improvements, ceiling adaptations, flooring preparation, decoration, bathroom alterations, glazing works and associated making good. Together, these works helped improve the performance and presentation of the building while preparing it for its next chapter as a specialist residential care home.

Care was also taken to ensure the refurbishment felt homely rather than clinical. Finishes, colours and layouts were considered with the future residents in mind, helping to create a setting that feels settled, welcoming and easy to use. This approach was particularly important in a specialist residential environment, where the quality of the surroundings can play an important role in supporting comfort, routine and independence.

Safe Haven is a strong example of OTL Group’s experience in delivering sensitive refurbishment projects within care environments. The completed home balances practicality, compliance and comfort, helping to provide a setting that supports person-centred care in a calm and welcoming environment.
