Set within the grounds of Aberbeeg Hospital, the project comprised the demolition of an existing storage barn and the construction of a new standalone staff welfare building, alongside the comprehensive refurbishment of the former morgue. The newly constructed facility provided a kitchen, dining area, toilets, and staff amenities, creating a dedicated hub for daily use. In parallel, the existing morgue structure was carefully reconfigured to accommodate offices and meeting rooms, ensuring continuity of use while upgrading the building for modern administrative functions.

The refurbishment works focused on internal reorganisation, introducing new layouts that maximised usable space while maintaining a calm and professional environment. Structural alterations, upgraded finishes, and modern services were integrated to support office and meeting functions, transforming a previously utilitarian building into a comfortable and practical workplace. Particular attention was given to circulation, acoustics, and lighting to enhance usability for hospital staff.

Externally, the removal of the outdated storage barn allowed for a clearer site arrangement and improved functionality. The new staff welfare building was positioned to complement the existing estate, providing a contemporary yet sympathetic addition to the hospital setting. Durable materials and efficient construction methods were employed to ensure longevity, low maintenance, and minimal disruption to ongoing hospital operations throughout the works.

At the heart of the project was the creation of spaces that supported staff wellbeing and collaboration. The inclusion of kitchen and dining facilities encouraged social interaction, while the new offices and meeting rooms provided dedicated areas for focused work and team engagement. Together, these spaces improved day-to-day working conditions and contributed positively to the wider hospital environment.

The Aberbeeg Morgue Conversion demonstrated how thoughtful demolition, refurbishment, and new-build construction unlocked value within existing healthcare estates. By adapting underused buildings and delivering purpose-built staff facilities, the project provided a lasting improvement to operational efficiency while respecting the character and constraints of the site, as originally outlined during pre-construction planning.
